I used to do something similar with my domains, too, but I found it -reeeally- increased the amount of spam I got since a lot of automated mailers will try random combinations or just make up all the obvious ones: admin@, mailbox@, sysop@, etc.
I suppose Google might have a better spam filter than anything that was available around the turn of the century, though.
