Basically, if you're trained with the greatsword, then a crossbow will never be as good a weapon for you as your greatsword, so it's a waste of your time to carry a crossbow.

I think carrying a different tool for different circumstances went out of style the same time it became tacky to have some ranged people and some melee people, or to have any diversity in your party's abilities.
There's this theory that differing abilities don't "synergize" with each other, because if you've got one member who hits really good from a distance, having another member who hits really good from up close doesn't help with hitting from a distance, or vice versa. So if you have one paladin on a team with one wizard on a team with one archer ranger on a team with one up close rogue on a team with one cleric who can hit up close or from a distance, it's a waste because everybody's doing different things.
