I've always been a believer in the mage's staff. I made sure to shell out for an 'everburning torch' enchantment from my starting gold to make the crystal in it glow (assuming the DM approves).
I also dig the idea of spontaneous enchantment/forging a deeper bond with your signature tool. That being said, the first thing I need from a meta perspective is a bonus to hit. I have trouble hitting MYSELF with a lightning bolt right now. This is problematic as a ranged damage dealer.
