Not with a bang, nor with a bathtub.
Graaaaaaaaaaah... what do you do when all the active programs on your computer (all three of them) stop responding at the same time and attempts to bring up the task manager just seem to bog it down more? (Note: "Switch to Linux!" and "Get a Mac!" are the answers to give if you are interested in dying horribly.)
I have the next chapter of Tales of MU mostly written. I can see it. I can even switch windows to it. But as soon as I click on it, the window fades out and goes all "not responding"y. Because I do learn, I saved what I'd written earlier before I crashed so when I turn it off (we're at the point where this is a "when" and not an "if") I won't lose everything, but this is a frustration. It's possible the autosave/autorecovery will save me, but I'm somehow doubting that the lappy currently has that sort of presence of mind.
This is the second time it's done this tonight. The first time it was actually starting to act up when I was starting fall down.
I'm typing this on my desktop, of course, which now has an actual chair. This works out so much better than sitting on the edge of the bed and typing. Support YourLocal Ska Band Lumbar and all that.
Man, it was aggressively resisting attempts to shut down... I had to hold down the power button forever. I thought I was going to have to pop the battery for a second. While it's coming back up, I'll tell you about my day.
So, the apartment manager and the main maintenance guy came over approximately right after I finished posting MOARMU. The timing made me feel good about pushing through my jitteries and getting it done. The reaction to the living room was one of pleasant surprise. As I had hoped, she only looked at the contiguous "public" areas (kitchen, living room, main bathroom) and respected the fact that the bedroom doors were closed. She asked if I had been working on them, too, and I was able to honestly say yes I had been. She was very no-nonsense about it all, but not hostile.
All in all, it took about two minutes. I think the overwhelming first impression really helped; she could tell at a glance that I hadn't just shuffled things around.
Attention then turned to the problem of the bathtub, and after seeing the cracks and the depression she agreed that it would need to be replaced. We don't have an ETA on that, which was to be expected because it's an outside job and the holidays are all upon us.
On the subject of holidays, I'm going to be spending tomorrow night and the following day in the company of my family. I'm so glad that this is behind me and that I'll be able to relax and enjoy myself, because this is one of my big treats of the year. Yes, I actually like my family and enjoy spending time with them. Crazy, I know.
Aaaand lappy doesn't appear to be booting back up. Fun! By coincidence or Christmas miracle, a freelance computer tech is coming here tomorrow to do an emergency hard drive swap on my roommate's computer. (She blew her motherboard... and then broke her computer.) I think as a long term solution, I need to stop buying my laptops from The Walled Market.
Well, there will be at least a Tales of MU update tomorrow... possibly more than that, depending on whether or not I can recover what I'd already written. Nothing probably on Christmas. If I have a working lappy with me there may be a Christmasy story. I had been planning on taking Friday off, but then I hadn't been planning on all this other crap. Friday's going to be a work day. A get down to it day. Nothing to stress, nothing to clean... time to start making good. Even if my lappy's dead, my desktop is in fine working order and I have a nice adjustable chair and a heated and vibrating massage pad for it.
