Advertising
Apr. 28th, 2009 06:38 pmI was thinking about dropping the BlogAds from the site for a bit, because the only money it was really bringing in was from those anti-meat ads, which I disagreed with on several levels... though I figured I might as well take their money. When I started switching over to the reader sponsorship model, I started refusing those kinds of ads and that left the box pretty empty for a bit. I was already refusing ads that had non-work-safe pictures, which was the other thing that seemed like it could have been a moneymaker.
But now I'm getting all kinds of ad buys for small press and independent press books, which is awesome. It's what I would really prefer to see there, as I think it's relevant to what I'm doing and I think it may be of greater interest to my readers than a virtual tour of a meat packing plant or whatever.
My big Project Wonderful ads have also been doing pretty wonderfully. Right this moment... last time I looked at it, anyway... they were occupied by squishable.com and Queen of the Cat People, the jewelry site of
qotcpcf who I met during the train shenanigans. She's actually been pretty much living there for a while, in either the big tower ad slot or one of the squares, so check out her site and her Etsy store.
(Oh, and if anybody has any experience with Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors con, she has some questions that she could use help with.)
I'd also like to point out, though, that while I've often got a lot of stalwarts bidding the big ads up a few dollars a day, the reason I have the square ad blocks is so there's always a relatively inexpensive option for people who want to get a link to their own webnovel, or comic, or craft page, or whatever. I had set the minimum bidding to $0.10 a day because having no minimum bid attracts a lot of really questionable sites that use a shotgun technique to grab space wherever it's cheapest... I'm going to try moving that down to one cent. I'll probably get some scammy and porny ads that way, but hopefully they'll be outbid before I even have a chance to block them. Those spaces rarely go higher than $0.50 a day, and if they ever do so consistently I'll add more slots.
Heck, since I'm editing the space I'll add two more now. I have an inkling that making the bar a little larger might also make the space as a whole stand out more. We'll see how that goes.
