News For Today
Well, I messed up Mackenzie's class schedule. It's not the first time it's happened, but this time it came up when I decided to make a big deal out of the order of her classes in the narration. When channeling her Friday morning I-don't-wanna-ness in Chapter 34, I was hit by the idea of using how much she resents her first and last classes... the problem is that Professor Swain's class is actually her middle class. Her first class of the day is Acantha's, which she loves.
When I realized this, I saw two easy ways of fixing it.
One is to rewrite the opening of chapter 34 so it breezes through the morning and lunch. That wouldn't be too hard to do, especially if Mackenzie's taking a long time to wake up. The problem is that then I can't have anything happening at lunch.
The other is to make the change in class order canonical. That's what I've chosen to do for the moment, because the chapter I was writing for tomorrow deals with lunch and for various scheduling reasons I didn't want to push that back to dinner. Having two classes that Mackenzie happens to be in flip-flop with each other doesn't seem realistic, but the idea that someone would arbitrarily move Bryony's class with little notice does kind of jibe with the running theme of how bureaucracy deals with a gnome and vice-versa.
So I did some quick edits to 34 and 35 to make this so. I'm not fully pleased with it as a solution, because now we have Mackenzie mentioning that she got a notice only after the fact. The more I think about it the more I think it's worth rethinking my plans going forward in order to preserve with as few retcons as possible what I've already established.
I'm... going to leave the edits I've made for now, and think about it. If I change it up I'm going to do have more work for the chapter that goes up tomorrow than if I leave it, but I want to make the right decision on creative grounds. So I'm going to think about it while I go AFK for a bit this evening.
State of the Me
It's getting cooler at night. I'm discovering once again what a wonderful thing it is for my sleep when I can pile under ALL THE BLANKETS. I haven't actually added any to my pile from what I've been using through the late summer/early fall, I just have them stacked more efficiently so I have all their weight on me. Better quality sleep means I'm going to be able to start writing earlier in the day.
Dreams From Last Night
I was living in my same attic, except it was attached to the house of Jack's in-laws. My cat, Dorian, unearthed a living porcelain doll named Audra who was looking for work.
