So effective yesterday I'm doing a thing where every work day I set aside an hour to work on the rules for A Wilder World. The game is basically finished on a conceptual and design level; it's writing things out in a fashion that makes sense to other human beings that's going to be the trick.
And it is important. I've seen a number of roleplaying games that work best on the "master/apprentice" model of learning. That is, the rules aren't written in a way that will make sense to anyone who isn't acquainted with the rules. It's always going to be easier to learn by doing alongside people who've done before, but having learned the ropes of roleplaying games alongside my brothers with no one to teach us, it's important to me that the game be accessible.
Right now I'm specifically working on a no-frills, nuts-and-bolts document that's all rules of play, not the GM guidelines or philosophy or anything. This is, of course, so I can get on with playtesting... if it's important to me for personal reasons that the rules be comprehensible in the finished product, it's vital that they be available in an understandable and fixed form for playtesting. If I'm explaining things every step of the way, it's not a real test because I know how things are *supposed* to work. No one has a chance to figure out what all they can do or spot inconsistencies.
I'm aware that it's been a couple of weeks without a newsletter. I'd meant to do one for this past weekend, but I needed the sleep. I could scurry to have one done in the middle of the week, but it seems like a good time to sort of reset the schedule.
State of the Me
Slept about ten hours, with an interruption of a couple of hours in the morning. Feeling pretty good.
Plans For The Day
Day two of the MU writing cycle, so I've got a target of 1,000 words on the next chapter. There's the hour of writing the nuts-and-bolts rules for A Wilder World. I expect to make quite a big dent in the playtest document in that time. I also need to come up with a new concept for a flash story, and take a stab at writing the will-o-the-wisp one.
