So I woke up a bit after 10 this morning and between the hours of 11 and 1, I wrote 2,000 words of something that had popped into my head last night. It's a pretty great feeling. to have done that... it feels like I am, in some sense, back. Back in the saddle, or the swing of things, or wherever it is that serious writing happens. I haven't had much in the way of total output so far this week, but I've been working my way back up to being able to just sit down and write, which is really and truly and seriously the most important trick of being a writer... and one that long time readers of this blog know that I give a lot of thought to.
I'm going to spend a little bit more time letting the momentum build, but once I'm in the groove I'm going to be starting a special kind of circle or support group for writers and people who would write, devoted not to critiquing prose that exists or perfecting the art and craft of writing, but achieving the practice of writing.
Overcoming writer's block. Overcoming beginner's nerves. Overcoming preparation anxiety. Overcoming feelings of inadequacy. Overcoming impostor's syndrome. Overcoming the blank page.
I was going to call this group "HOW DO I SHOT WORD?", but Jack has pointed out that something like "The Writer's Toolbox" might be a little more appropriate because I'm going to be taking a toolbox approach. It's going to be a foundational principle of the group that no one piece of advice or solution can work for all kinds of minds and lives, so the goal is not going to be for me to be dispensing wisdom from on high, but for us to be collecting and sharing our experience so we can assemble a kit of literal and metaphorical tools for increasing productivity and building confidence.
I'm thinking Tuesday or Wednesday of next week I'll be getting the ball rolling on that, because it'll be a nice slack period in the writing cycle. I'm putting a reminder in my phone about it, since I have a phone that's easier to put reminders in.
The State of the Me
Good. It took me a couple of extra hours to get to sleep last night, but I got 7 hours of sleep in the end.
Plans For Today
Got a chapter of Tales of MU to clean up and post, and I see no problems there. I'm into my third day of the flash fiction writing cycle and that's going well. The very next thing I'm going to do is the hour of writing on AWW's playtest document, which is also going well. I think I'm going to post what I have at the end of the week for feedback, purely in a "This makes sense to gamers who aren't me, right?" sense.
