So, my housemates picked up a gently used treadmill. I like treadmills; the only exercise I can safely do is slow, low-impact ones like walking. The treadmills in the fitness room at my old apartment complex had consoles that were low enough and flat enough to put a laptop on and type tolerably well while doing an extremely slow walk. This one's not quite that happily situated... the console is high and at a steep incline, though it does have a book holder where I can put the keyboard portion of my netbook and tilt the screen back. It's pretty useless for typing, but I was able to watch a video while I walked for an hour this morning.
Sadly, this particular treadmill doesn't seem to be very good at sustaining a slow pace on manual (the pre-programmed fitness routines are all too intense for me)... the manual mode seems to keep trying to adjust its speed to match the user's which is probably a nice feature but when one's target speed is 1 mile per hour it's too easy to momentarily dip down to a level where it just stops. My ideal exercise solution is a treadmill that will keep moving at a steady pace, and that has a console or tray where I can put a laptop and type. They do make treadmill desk/workstations, but in my opinion they're a bit pricey... probably a bit of a niche market, really.
That's not to say I won't get any use out of this one! It just won't become my stationary mobile office. I'm going to try to get an hour of gentle walking in every day for now. It's not much, but it's more exercise than I normally get (and quite a bit less than I got in my mid-20s when I often walked to and from work).
I did lose a few hours of the day to getting to know the machine, hence why I didn't do a report/task list like I'd planned. I wouldn't say it's been an unproductive day, though.
