I've long liked treadmills, since walking is traditionally the only form of exercise I can do without wiping myself out. When I worked outside the house, I usually walked to or from work, and at that point in my life my endurance was the highest it's ever been. The other reason I've liked treadmills is that at the slow pace I can sustain, it can be possible to read or even write... but writing requires the treadmill to have the right sort of console, that so few of them do. It used to be easy to find one that you could lay a laptop on, but now that they sell treadmill desks for hundreds of dollars extra I think they've stopped making them that way.
My folks' basement, where I've been staying off and on since mid-August, has both a treadmill and an exercise bike. I didn't pay much attention to the bike when I first got here, because treadmill. After a few frustrating experiences trying to write on my phone while using the treadmill, though I tried the bike, since at least that can be done sitting down.
And it turned out I liked it. My first couple of tries I did only get five or ten minutes in and then I was exhausted, but once I brought out my phone and sat back to read or write something on it, I was able to control my pace to something more manageable. Somehow it had never occurred to me before that that it's possible to pedal slowly. So I've done that for half an hour, 2-3 times a day most days that I've been here.
It definitely has had a beneficial effect. Over Labor Day weekend, after just a couple of weeks of this, there was a day that I went to Union Station in Kansas City (which is awesome, by the way) and did the Renassance Fair in 80-something degree heat and played games at Dave & Buster's in the evening, and by the end of the day it was clear that my endurance was definitely better than it had been. I've noticed other small benefits throughout the day.
So now that I'm coming up on what logistically speaking needs to be the end of my stay here, I've decided to get an under-the-desk model exercise bike so I can keep it up. It would be more ideal in some way to wait until after I move, but I think keeping up an exercise routine for the next few weeks will help the move go more smoothly.
The State of the Me
Slept better last night.
