Yesterday I was looking at Patreon, as I'd said I would. I liked what I saw, but it also became apparent that I wouldn't be able to figure out how it all works without actually using it. So, I signed up. And you can sign up to support me at http://www.patreon.com/AlexandraErin ... I think I'll be pushing it more starting in January. I'm still kind of feeling my way around. I have two sponsors over there already. Hi, sponsors!
I expect early adoption rates might be lower for me than most creators at my level, because I'm already doing this "by hand"... a lot of the people who would be pledging through Patreon are already doing it directly. My hope is that Patreon, having built-in accountability and communication features (and being all shiny and social media-y and Web 2.0) will attract some of the stragglers. If anyone who is currently going through PayPal wants to make the jump to Patreon... feel perfectly free! In the long term, I think Patreon will have more to offer both of us.
(On the other hand, if you're not interested in a greater ability to "peek over my shoulder" and keep up with me as I'm working or anything like that, then there's no point in messing what you've got. The nice thing about PayPal is the way it just sort of works without any need for engagement.)
The main perk of sponsoring me right now is my newsletter, which also includes free access to my self-published but not free works (mostly short stories). That archive is actually down at the moment because I'm refurbishing and migrating it (aren't I great at planning?), but it'll be back up later today or tomorrow. The next newsletter will be going out over the weekend, and it will contain a brand new short story that's going on sale soon, called "The Lands of Passing Through".
The State of the Me
Went to bed at a reasonable hour, woke up fairly early. I was planning on "clocking in" exactly at 10, but found myself staring at the computer wanting to do nothing else except this post. Feeling good, in short.
Plans For Today
Today's day 1 of the writing cycle, which is conception. Conceive the next chapter, think about the future. I'm in the middle of a fairly clear sequence of chapters so this is going to be mostly passive, in between other things. I'm going to start by compiling chapters towards the next Omnibus, then write some commentary. In the afternoon, I'll be working on the newsletter and figuring out what I'm doing with Patreon.
I'm also going to be attempting to make a video. I want to do more vlogging, I have some videos I need to do for people's perks, but there are some space/lighting problems I need to work out. Whatever I record today might not be usable, but it should tell me what I'll need to know.
