The Daily Report

I got some more movement on my Patreon account after mentioning it in a note at the end of the last Tales of MU chapter. Some of that is still people switching from PayPal to Patreon, but even though that's not an increase in income I'm counting it as success. Patreon support is visible, and nothing succeeds like success. Right now I have an independent website that says ten people think it's worth it to give me a couple of bucks for every few chapters. That's a nice testimonial.

I am going to need more readers pitching in on the regular to keep this thing going. Some of my largest recurring sponsors have either suspended or are reducing their existing pledges. I am nothing but grateful for how much support they've given me, but I've always been very conscious of the fact that my continued self-sufficiency rested in the hands of a small number of individuals. People ask me a lot if $1 a month is really worth it... well, with Patreon, it works out the same to get $100 from one person or $1 from a hundred people. Even with PayPal, the difference has never been so much that I would turn my back on a hundred people with a dollar... it certainly doesn't cost me money to accept a dollar from someone. And the advantage of the $1 readers is there are potentially so many more of them. Having those little bits of support does more to alleviate my financial insecurity than individual large donors do.

I'll really start pushing Patreon pretty early on in 2014, but for now I can afford a bit of a slow build. I understand people wanting to sit back and find out how this works, since I'm still working it out myself. Just today I learned that my sponsors can post things in my Patreon feed themselves, the way you leave messages on a friend's wall on Facebook. That's neat, and means that using Patreon as a line of communication will be a little bit easier than I'd expected.

The State of the Me

I was actually awake at seven and up and about a bit before eight today. Rather than either putting my nose to the grindstone right away or sleeping in and maybe waking up groggy, I spent some time just unwinding. I'm feeling pretty good at the start of the work day.

Plans For Today

On Saturday I fly back to Omaha for the holidays, so today and tomorrow I'm kind of winding things down. No big bold plans, no major moves. I'm working on a bonus story (the first of the perk ones) for tomorrow, and I'm going to continue compiling chapters for the Omnibus III. I'm about halfway through it, I think.
