The Daily Report

I'm glad that I like to have some distance between myself and my computer screen anyway, because today I discovered a crucial flaw in my new set-up: at a certain time of the year, the sunlight streams in through the side window in the morning at just the right angle to wash out my computer screen completely. It's the window in the room that doesn't have blinds or any kind of shade, so I'm going to have to contrive some kind of covering for it until I can install a more permanent solution. For now I've just turned my monitor at an odd angle. Which is a little bit weird, having it be so completely not parallel to my plane of vision, but it works, I think because I already sit about a yard and a half away from it to begin with.

In fact, I'm thinking this might become part of my repertoire of tricks for overcoming mental blocks. In addition to going to work somewhere else and/or on a different device I can just turn the monitor a bit to get a "different perspective".

Ah, the sun has actually moved on in the twenty minutes since I got up. It's already off the screen.

Today is October 6th. One year ago today, I rolled into town in a U-Haul truck. Today begins my second year in Hagerstown. I've got a lot of thoughts about that, but I'll probably be processing them through the week rather than packing them all in here.

Yesterday wasn't technically a work day but it ended up being my most productive writing day since September 20th. [personal profile] popelizbet pointed me to a Halloween writing contest, and I ended up writing one entry for it, and another short story that started life as an attempt at a second entry. Actually, it's a story I've been thinking about writing since I was last in Florida, but I never found the impetus for it.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and I'm thinking of actually shopping it around a little, but I think I'm going to expand it a little... its current length is more than five times too long for the contest, but since I started out writing for economy there are some bits that could stand to be expanded.

Between the two pieces that I wrote... one was exactly the kind of random, spur of the moment writing I need to be doing more of, and the other was a great example of having an idea and just sitting down and writing it. It felt good.

The State of the Me

Doing pretty good. Fall fell over the weekend, and so we're in a sunny-but-chilly phase of weather. Longtime readers will already know that I sleep better the cooler it is.

Plans For Today

Following up on the theme of having achieved a solid platform to push off of last week, I'm going to use today to get my ducks in a row for the week. This is going to be the week where I write four chapters again, like I was doing before.
