End of Year Fundraiser
Dec. 7th, 2014 12:01 pmMy overall goal for next year is to really grow my income as an indie writer to give me some of the security that I've been lacking. I have three main points for this plan: more outside story/poem sales (which is a chunk of money plus new readers), more Patreon participation, and more ebook sales.
Right now I'm still very much going month to month and week to week, and there's a psychic/emotional toll to this when I'm constantly making decisions like, "Do I pay the webhosting bill or the phone bill this week?" or worrying how I'm going to contribute my fair share of groceries and rent and other household expenses. Having these worries on top of the other uncertainties and stresses in my life... well, it all adds up and it all wears down. The trends are positive, but I really need to kick things into a higher gear, and I can't do that if I don't have solid ground underneath me.
So I'm going to be beating the drum or rattling the cup or whatever you want to call it pretty heavily for the rest of 2014, because my goal for the next few weeks is to alleviate the immediate pressures (which right now would be groceries and webhosting) and then have as big a financial cushion as I can get, so my financial planning in 2015 can be fully focused on making money, not making do.
This is the time to decide what my work is worth to you, as a blogger or author or both. Becoming a sponsor on Patreon won't give me any immediate boost, but will let you make a difference in 2015. Buying the e-books of my collection of short stories, non-fiction book about grief, or Tales of MU collections also puts money directly into my hands.
Thank you!
And remember: every reader is valuable to me, whether you can afford to pay or not. My model depends on drawing a crowd in. Every set of eyes on my work helps. If everybody who can't afford felt guilty and slunk away, I'd be out of business in no time. I would rather you were a proud to be me reader than ashamed that you can't pay. I trust that people who believe in what I do or even just enjoy it will do what they can, as they can, whether it's a one-time payment, ongoing sponsorship, or just helping spread word of mouth (or word of mouse).
