The big publishing houses aren't really interrested in blockbusters, they are more interrested in publishing "safe" books that they know will sell something. This is especially true for fantasy/sci-fi. That's the reason you see so many books by the same few authors, no matter how bad they are, and why two thirds of the fantasy/sci-fi section at a given book store is LODR clones and Star Wars novels.
