If you want to make a good backup versus loss on bookmarks, my suggestion is to use the Google toolbar. The Bookmarks dropdown has an option for importing your existing bookmarks, and so long as you're logged in to Google when you do it, you should be able to access all of them from wherever.
I use it at work due to a repetitive issue with Vista- it keeps refusing to write data, or erases it- such as periodically eliminating all bookmarks & home page tabs in Firefox. I set up a subdirectory in the Google toolbar, and it's all stored in the cloud. So one click and I'm back in business again.
Now if Vista and HP could just resolve the printer & network card driver compatibility issues they have, I'd be able to keep from rebooting this damn thing twice a day...
