I can't deny that the comments were an attraction, but no, readership wouldn't grow. It couldn't. The site can't handle nearly as much traffic with the comments enabled as it can without it. You and a few other people would come back, but other people would give up in irritation as the site refused to load on the first try, and eventually I'd hit a wall.
"Traversing to the Livejournal is not really an option." is an odd statement to make. You've obviously got a Livejournal. For quite a while before I ditched the comments entirely, you had to click to load them. Why exactly is clicking the link to read the Livejournal comments not an option?
