Brings us back 'round to "Garbage In, Garbage Out". Unimaginative gamers make for a poor game. I remember when my older brother ran into things that weren't in the rule books back in the day, he'd just use his best judgement when assigning a level of difficulty to something one of us thought up as a solution to a problem. More often than not we'd fail, but it was gratifying to have at least tried. And coming up with someone the DM wasn't prepared for before hand was just priceless.
I hope not all RPG players these days are as whiney and rigid as the ones yer describing. Haven't they ever read The Art Of War? "As water conforms to the shape of the land it flows over, so to in war must one be flexible." "Know yourself and know your enemy, and you need not fear the outcome of any battle."
And for the record, I almost never go anywhere without the 6-inch purple teddy bear my girlfriend gave me ;D
