News For Today:

I'm leaving to go back to Omaha in a little bit here, which is good as my laptop is becoming less and less usable. I thought of installing a Ubuntu partition as being a "silver bullet", as it really was the times I've done it with computers that were even farther gone, but this thing keeps freezing up and even crashing. I haven't installed anything didn't come with it except Chrome (and the updates it wanted to install) and I'm using the netbook edition.

When I get back to Omaha, I'm going to take off Ubuntu and try the boot record fix that was suggested to me. If that doesn't work I'm going to try a full install of Ubuntu (instead of the partition) and see if I can get that to work. If that works any better I'll keep it Ubuntu; if it doesn't, I'll turn the computer over to someone else to see if they can get it in working order, and if that fails I will do a little research and invest some of my money in something more reliable. This laptop was provided by a reader, but at this point I feel like I can pick up something for myself without appealing for direct aid for that purpose. Especially since it'll be three months before I need a portable computer again.

I'm really excited about the story that turned into a story about Aidan's father. I like how it's turned out. But the backend of Wordpress is one of the sites that won't seem to load here so I can't post so much as a placeholder.

Personal Status:

Okay. I slept maybe an hour last night, which is an hour more than I usually manage to sleep before traveling. No dreams, obviously.

Random Link:

The Great And Terrible Shira Lipkin, AKA [livejournal.com profile] shadesong is an author who has parleyed her crowdfunded internettings Shayara into an incredible six-book deal. I could be mistaken (I frequently am, when it comes to matters of memory), but I believe that she was the one who introduced me to the writings of [livejournal.com profile] csecooney at WisCon of last year. Neither of which are the reasons I'm putting her up here today.

[livejournal.com profile] shadesong does amazing things at the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, and is participating in the 6th annual walk for change, a fundraiser. I've already sent my contribution... a bit larger than usual, to reflect my increasing good fortunes, and if I weren't behind where I want to be at the moment anyway... if this were a normal Monday-and-Friday week and I had a head full of steam needing direction, I'd be doing a Wednesday Update incentive like "If there are $200 contributed to Shira's team..." or something like that.

I'm not, though. I'm not in a position to offer to do more than I am, in terms of writing and posting. I've had to re-open this window twice since I started making this post.

But in the absence of me being able to offer an incentive, I'm just saying: the link is there. If you've got an extra five bucks or ten bucks or whatever bucks that you were thinking of sending to me this month, consider it throwing it her way. Or look into giving something to your nearest local equivalent, or give it to Planned Parenthood, who could really use your help at the moment.

This is not some weird reverse psychology thing. I'm having one of the best months I've ever had since I started doing this, I've got money coming in for my book on top of that, my ad revenues have been up, and I have viable fundraising plans for the future. The kind of work Shira does needs funding now.

Plans For Today

Get back to Omaha. Get back to the dollhouse. Get Aidan's story up. Rest as needed, see how I'm feeling. Being in front of a fully functional computer might bring on a productive/creative rush of energy, or being near the comfort of my blanket-pile and a giant emo kitty who wants to snuggle might make me crash.

Er. If your hardware is still behaving the same under a completely different operating system, I suspect you might have hardware issues :( I wouldn't even bother with a full ubuntu install, its probably not worth your time.

It isn't behaving the same. It is misbehaving differently. One partition's OS is clearly bedeviled by malware. The other's just not functioning well.

Ahhh, I misunderstood. The freezing does make me think RAM or mobo problems still :-(

It doesn't do that when I boot it up in Windows, though. That works just fine except for the fact that it's obviously hijacked.
