What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Neutral. Not Northern, Southern, or Western, just American. Your national American identity is more important to you than your local identity, because you don't really have a local identity to begin with.

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

Yeah, I like the part where he says it's not tied to any region. But the weird thing is I am almost sure he's got an entry for "Midlands" because the Western accent page mentions it.

I ended up with neutral as well, and I'm out here on the west coast.

Western. Like Midland, Western is another accent that people consider neutral. So, you might not actually be from the Western half of the country, but you definitely sound like it.

And if you're not from the West, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Pittsburgher - the quiz can't tell the difference;
(b) Someone from Canada (probably southern Ontario) who doesn't have a Canadian accent;
(c) Someone from northern New England who doesn't have a New England accent; or
(d) Someone from Texas or the Heartland who was born after 1980.
You are definitely not from New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, the Deep South, etc.

I got Nothing. Mine is American, not regional. It said so.

What can I say, born in Philly, raised in the South, live in DC metro.

The is basically the same thing the Western entry says (the one I got) only worded differently. Not from any specific place, yada yada. I wonder if all the ones that aren't east/south say that?

I went into the quiz wondering what I'd get, being from Canada. Imagine my surprise when I got... Canadian. Tricksie quiz.

Being also from Canada I wondered as well and I got... Western.

From the quiz:
"And if you're not from the West, you are probably one of the following:
...
(b) Someone from Canada (probably southern Ontario) who doesn't have a Canadian accent"

Well, I'm from Southern Ontario. But I object to my accent being described as not Canadian.

Amusing, and about as accurate as one would expect given the context.

"New York City. You are most definitely from New York City. Not New Jersey, not Connecticut. If you are from Jersey then you can probably get into New York City in 10 minutes or less."

I'm from about 50 miles north of London. Getting to New York would take closer to 10 hours than 10 minutes.

Looking through those questions - who are these people who apparently pronounce all vowels the same way, and how does anyone ever understand what they're saying?

Context, the same way any homophone/homonym is understood. The human brain is capable of some amazing things there.

It's firmly convinced I have a Southern accent. Which, to an extent, I do. Until and unless I'm tired and grouchy, in which case it starts turning back into a New York accent.
