News For Today
Well, today's better than yesterday was. At 3 in the afternoon, I'm cutting off any further caffeine, so I don't know how much more I'm going to get done today. But I have finished off the backlog of confirmations for Author Appreciation copies of The Gift of the Bad Guy that built up when I was in Florida. I got behind on them and a few other items of bookkeeping when I considered the inadvisability of dealing with my PayPal records and customer email addresses on a laptop I knew was compromised.
I've sold 19 dedicated copies so far, which with four days left in the pre-sale is kind of on track with the low end of where I expected to be (25 such copies pre-sold). I expect that once I've done this a couple of times, I'll be selling out the AAEs during the pre-sale period. I think of the pre-sale money as a way of getting an "advance" without having a publisher, and it sets a precedent that may be helpful when it's time to collect print editions.
So those confirmation/opt-in emails that I was going to send to my subscribers before March? Those will start going out this weekend. The March newsletter will be coming out towards the end of the month rather than the middle, which is when I'd planned.
I've received queries a couple of times about print copies of The Gift of the Bad Guy. For reasons of cost effectiveness to everyone involved, my plan is to release a printed book collecting it and its two follow-ups, which together will form a decent-sized book. Otherwise it's going to be like $15 or $20 for a hundred page chapbook with artwork that was sort of optimized for an e-reader. If I had no plans for another print edition, I might feel differently, but it just feels like gouging to sell expensive copies of the individual pieces when I know I'll be able to offer a higher quality and more affordable version later on.
On the other hand, I'm being upfront about the plans and no one has to buy the print version... and "never tell people 'no' when they want to give you money for something" has pretty much become one of my precepts. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm open to being persuaded.
Personal Assessment
Better than yesterday. Not great. I think I'll be able to sleep okay tonight, which will make tomorrow back to normal.
Dreams From Last Night
Varied and disturbing.
Plans For Today
Do bookkeeping stuff until I can't.
