A minor but important item checked off on my to-do list: I switched the Project Wonderful ad code to asynchronous loading. What this means is that it doesn't wait for them to load before it draws the rest of the page. This should result in a slightly faster page loading time (and a much faster page loading time when PW's servers are slow for whatever reason). This will also have the side effect of decreasing the frequency of the dreaded "maximum connections exceeded" error.

At the same time I did this, I also added another ad (right now, a single banner) at the top of the page. This is sort of a test. I'm looking at paring down the clutter in the sidebar, and reducing the number of ads seems like an easy way to do that, but when I've moved towards that before I've received feedback from artists and artisans who like having the low-cost advertising opportunity there. On the other hand, I've had a couple of email queries from potential advertisers who don't feel that the sidebar square ads or the big ones at the bottom of the chapter are particularly effective...

So in the long term the squares in the sidebar might disappear, or the ad up top might turn into smaller ones... you know, I've just talked myself into something. I'm going to ditch the banner ad up top and move the squares in the sidebar to a horizontal row of squares up top. That way the same advertisers will be able to bid, and they'll get more bang for their buck, and the sidebar will shrink. Win-win-win.
