Friday, September 9th: None are righteous.
Sep. 9th, 2011 01:52 pmNews For Today
So, I've had a conundrum on Star Harbor Nights that's been impeding me from actually doing anything with the new material I've written... I kept finding myself thinking that the nature of the "episode" format (i.e., each story is more self-contained) would make it a great way to build up my Kindle library, but I didn't want the established Star Harbor readers who have been my longest-standing and most dedicated fans to have to pay money (and possibly adopt a new format) to read it. Obviously I could release them in one place or the other first and then port them over later, but which way to do it, and with what sort of delay?
Today I had the realization that I was overlooking the obvious: do both at the same time. I'd fallen prey to old media thinking. Yeah, me. No one's immune to it. None are righteous.
The fact is that the web version and the e-book versions would be targeting different demographics, different populations. If one of my established readers wanted a convenient way to take the story with them offline, they'd be unlikely to balk at a 99 cent price tag. (Especially if they're an established e-book reader.)
So with that straightened out in my head, I'm going to be moving forward with what I'm mentally calling Star Harbor Nights: The Series (because it's modeled after a TV series, rather than my own typical serial format which it actually inaugurated.)
Also on the subject of e-books: I should have a link for my "immortality" story soon. At the last minute I reverted the title from "The Absolute Beginner's Guide To Immortality" to an earlier title, "To Live Forever..."... while I feel that the TABGTI title is a better title overall, TLF is the better title for this story. TABGTI raises expectations that this story doesn't deliver. I just might have it in me one day to write a book that would fit the other title, but this story isn't it.
Like my other short stories, it's priced at 99 cents... but I'm going to throw it into the newsletter next week, too. I think that's going to be my policy on my not-free self-published short stories: they're included in the price of the newsletter.
State of the Me
Slept last night. Fairly well. I've been having some shoulder pains that are getting worse, though. I haven't been doing any lifting or anything so I'm going to guess this is from moving around more in my sleep.
Dreams From Last Night
It was kind of weird. In my dream, Jack had moved to Papillion (one of Omaha's outlying villages) and I was still acting like it was a long-distance relationship. There was no sense that he'd moved there to be closer to me, it was just like he'd had to move for work or something and happened to end up there.
Plans For Today
Got a chapter of MU to finish. It may end up being shorter than the previous two; I had a bad brain day yesterday when I'd hoped to thresh out about half of it. Things like this are why I'm probably going to go for two chapters next week instead of three. Since the next chapter isn't planned until Tuesday, I'm going to be nice and not give this one a cliffhanger.
