So, I've just learned that our house is going to be somewhat occupied through the new year. I don't really do well in crowded situations with people I don't know, so I'm pretty much going to be hiding out in the attic. This might do wonders for my productivity or it might shoot it to pieces along with my nerves. Don't know. But definitely no grand schemes this week, and I may be unusually testy. Fair warning.

After investigating tablets and netbooks, I have my mind about 99% made up. As a replacement for my current lappy I want something like this... slightly larger than my current netbook but still pretty lean and light. The slightly larger size will make it easier to work with when it's my primary computer while still being small enough for me to carry and use.

My experiences borrowing Jack and Sarah's laptop in October and November have taught me that I don't want a full-sized laptop (indeed, I remember using my laundry hamper as an impromptu desk with my previous laptop because it was so heavy), but trying to do primary writing and editing on my little lappy usually results in me wishing it were just a little bit bigger. Having a slightly larger screen would also make it easier to do layout stuff on it. And having a little more muscle in it wouldn't necessarily hurt.

I do still like the idea of getting a tablet-and-keyboard combo as a back-up/on-the-go writing device, but that's going to wait until I get a chance to try on a 7 inch tablet keyboard for size. If I can't touch-type comfortably and accurately on a 7 inch keyboard then the tablet won't be an improvement over the phone or Kindle as a writing device. I know a 10-inch keyboard will work for me, but given what I'm looking at this for smaller will be better than larger even if they're available at the same price.

I will probably be getting the laptop now (by which I mean in the next two months) and the tablet in the summer, but it might go the other way around depending on how money comes in for me during January.
