I had a serious problem writing the end of a chapter yesterday (and in fact, the day before, too) that I realized too late was due to a problem in the middle. The structure of the story was lacking, and it was impossible to build towards a satisfying conclusion because it failed to build logically through the middle.
I think the problem came about because of the way I tend to write in shifts or spurts. Often I'll write part of a story (not necessarily the beginning) and then write another part and then join them together. A lot of times the joining is pretty simple, the equivalent of spot-welding. In this case there was a shift in the mood/tone/characterization that's not impossible to explain, but that I didn't adequately explain. I need to go back and block out the turns before I can figure out where it's heading at the end.
