I usually just ignore them.

But the other day, a clothing website I ordered from once, apparently detecting that I hadn't ordered anything recently, generated a coupon email that said "Are we still friends?" in the subject line.

You know, the subject line tends to jump out before the sender does, so seeing that hit my social anxiety button pretty hard. And when the panic subsided, I decided that a clear question like that deserves an unambiguous answer, so I hit their unsubscribe link.

And then today...

The Chicago Tribune--for reasons known only to God and the angels who are set over minor personal inconveniences--has been emailing me pretty steadily, usually offering the chance of being entered into a drawing for some sort of prize if I'll just subscribe to them. A lot of the special gifts are things that might interest anyone... iPhones, tablets, Kindles. Sometimes they just seem to be selling something whose connection to their newspaper business seems tenuous at best.

Today was one of those days. Today they sent me an email that says "Is grape stomping on your bucket list?"

Unsubscribed.
