...because Jack got into it and I wanted to know what he was talking about. It's not completely my cup of tea, though I find what they're doing interesting. I'm pretty much immune to the creepy aspect... insomnia and the occasional bout of caffeine-induced partial sleep paralysis mean I'm used to hallucinating menacing presences at the corner of my eye and things like that, so I often find myself being more analytical about the production and writing than I'm probably meant to be.

If the first season hadn't been so short in total runtime, I probably would have dropped it, but from the second season onward the story got more interesting. And after watching all of the videos over a few nights, I want to register the following theory for possible "called it" purposes later. Granted, I'm not sure that it's something that will ever be confirmed or denied. I'm not sure there's meant to be a definitive answer or interpretation for lots of things in the series.

But, anyway... the probably not at all groundbreaking part of this theory is that Alex and the Operator are tied together. No, really? I know. But I'm going to get more specific: the slenderness shows up in response to Alex's emotions. When Jay breaks into his apartment, he appears and Alex is like, "You led it here?" But it showed up when Alex got angry, and came closer when Alex was angrier. When Amy finds the camera, he shows up as Alex gets upset. Jay is tooling around in the woods in Rosswood park for who knows how long... then Alex shows up in the parking lot and gets exasperated that Jay couldn't follow his simple instructions to "meet me at the park tomorrow" (seriously, Alex, who taught you how to rendezvous?) and that's when things get slendery.

He shows up at film shoots when Alex drops his script, when Alex is annoyed with people on his set in a public park... little annoyances, so his appearance is distant and as non-threatening as it gets.

And when does he appear in Jay's hotel room apparently to attack Jay and Jessica? Probably at the moment when Alex is angrier and more desperate than any other time.

Granted, not all of his appearances could likely be directly correlated to an observable mood swing by Alex.

But it happened often enough to be striking to me.
