Getting on with overdue things.
Jul. 24th, 2011 08:23 pmSo, with certain events seemingly having reached their natural conclusions, it's time for me to get on with things and start making my way through the backlog of tasks that have accumulated. It's a big task, so I'm going to start with the little ones that are most easily disposed of.
I was really leery of any kind of public domaining/copyleft/Creative Commons stuff when I first started doing the online writing thing. I'd had some bad experiences with plagiarism in the bad old days of the Information Superhighway (we actually did call it that, for like fifteen minutes in 1993) and with not getting proper credit on "shared world" projects and basically realized I didn't have the resources to fight to protect my rights if anybody appropriated my work.
Since then, I have seen some amazing things, like how quickly and how far things proliferate and propagate on networks like Tumblr. I've also seen that the internet in general is pretty amazing about attribution. Yeah, pictures get orphaned from their creators more often than they should, but I think that's a consequence of the way pictures get shared rather than deliberate practice. With text content where a name and URL can be typed up and copied and pasted along with the thing? The net in general is pretty good about that.
And Tumblr of course makes it easy to add attribution to a post, and automatic for all that post's little children.
I've been meaning to explore more of that sort of thing, like maybe putting a Creative Commons license on my flash stories or putting more of them on Tumblr... and since it's not an infrequent occurrence that people ask me for permission to copy this post or that post that I make on this blog, I've also been meaning to articulate some kind of policy giving blanket permission there. Because I know that people can be shy about that sort of thing, and some people would rather not intrude or accidentally give offense. If there's a blanket policy, that saves everybody the trouble of having to put themselves forward.
So, I'll add this to the userinfo or make a sticky post on it or something, but here's the basic deal: any of the posts on this blog except the ones labeled "Magic Under Construction" or "MUC" or "A Wilder World" (which all deal with works in an unfinished state) may be freely copied and reposted to your own personal journal, blog, etc., or a favorite forum or community, so long as the results are properly attributed, not edited, and not posted behind a paywall or any kind of a filter that requires the viewer to be logged into something.
Basically, if I say something that you think is worth repeating or that resonates with you to the point that you want to share it with your flist/followers or shout it from the rooftops or that you just think needs to be read, feel free to do so.
Have at it!
